The actor has joined and won several strongman competitions across the world, with him bagging first place in 2018’s World’s Strongest Man tournament. He is very proud of his achievements in the said sports, and he is very willing to do whatever is necessary to defend his title.

Game of Thrones actor Hafthor Bjornsson admitted to using steroids

Hafthor Bjornsson has been in the bodybuilding career even before his stint in Game of Thrones. He played Ser Gregor Clegane in the fourth season of the show, taking over the role previously played by Conan Stevens and Ian Whyte. Interestingly, this was his first main acting role, and he gave a brilliant performance.

Being a bodybuilder entails rigorous training and a strict diet regimen, but sometimes, these aren’t enough to sustain the body. Some athletes resort to taking medications, and Bjornsson did not hide the fact that he had taken steroids. He confirmed it via ESPN: “Yes, I have. When you want to be the best, you do whatever it takes.”

This is not shocking at all, as many famed bodybuilders have also confessed to trying it at least once in their careers. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger had his own experience with it. The use of steroids, however, had often been speculated as the cause of death of several strongman competitors. Bjornsson is aware of this, as evident in his explanation:

When you are putting yourself through all this, I’ve always thought about, ‘What if I pass away?’ It would be very hard to know that I left my family too soon. I want to be there for my family. I want to be there for my daughter. But this is my life. This is what I enjoy to do.

As a professional athlete, actor, and family man, it might have been difficult for him to juggle work and personal life, but he sees to it that he takes care of himself.

It’s not difficult to see Bjornsson’s passion for what he does. In his conversation with Sports Illustrated, he said that being strong makes him feel good about himself. “You look around and say, I can lift more weights than anyone in the entire gym,” the actor stated, noting that it could sometimes feel addicting.

Bjornsson did not mention how often he used the substance and if he was still taking it at the time. Interestingly, he has never failed a drug test during competitions. In 2023, he suffered a major injury at a powerlifting event where he tore his left pectoralis major muscle off the humerus bone.
