“This is not a good look”: Charlie Cox and Andrew Garfield Nearly Blew Up Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Secret

Charlie Cox and Andrew Garfield are longtime friends. Garfield lived down the street from Cox and actors Eddie Redmayne, Robert Pattinson, and Jamie Dornan. Cox and Garfield landed Marvel superhero roles in two disconnected projects. However, the MCU brought them together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, although the two of them didn’t have a combination scene.

Cox and Garfield nearly ruined their cameo appearances in the film when they decided to catch up while in Atlanta to shoot the movie. Cox shared the story with his Daredevil co-stars who found the two actors’ situation really funny. Interestingly, Garfield also had his own story about nearly ruining his surprise cameo.

Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock returned for a small cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield‘s possible appearances were thrown around so much at the time, Cox’s cameo came as a pleasant surprise. The rumors of Cox’s appearance were less prominent and many didn’t think that Daredevil would actually pop up in a Spider-Man film.

Cox even denied his cameo rumors when asked about it in an interview with ComicBook.com. Interestingly, Cox and Garfield were close friends and Cox read from the script that Garfield was playing the role of Peter Parker 2 in the film. During a recent discussion with his co-stars for Daredevil: Born Again promotions, Cox shared the hilarious story of catching up with Garfield.

He shared that when he got to Atlanta, he texted Garfield to invite him out for a little catch-up between old friends. He wrote to the We Live in Time actor, “If the trades are to be believed, we’re in the same movie.” Garfield immediately replied, “Nah, I don’t think so, dude. I’m doing Spider-Man.”

Garfield’s innocent reply was so funny to Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson, who were listening to the story, and they burst into laughter. Cox shared that he confirmed to Garfield that he was also in the same movie. Garfield responded that Cox was not in his script, to which Cox shared, “Well, I’m in my script.”

They decided to hang out and went to a restaurant together. Cox shared that they weren’t thinking the plan through and just showed up at the restaurant, where the reality hit them. Cox shared:

We went to go to a restaurant together and we didn’t think about it. We were just like, ‘Where should we meet?’ and ‘Let’s go here’. And we showed up to this restaurant. And we walked in. And then we both had this moment of like, ‘Oh… This is not a good look.’

The two actors ended up sitting on a table, where both the chairs faced the wall. Cox shared that they “tried not to look at each other.” Marvel bosses would’ve lost their minds if Cox and Garfield were spotted together in a restaurant in Atlanta, where it was publicly known that the Spider-Man 3 filming was progressing.

During an interview with Esquire, Andrew Garfield revealed that he shared a room with Charlie Cox while filming the Spider-Man film. He shared that they had to hide the fact that they were in Atlanta together to keep their surprise cameos a secret. He shared with Esquire:

I have roomed with Charlie, funnily enough, when I was shooting the latest Spider-Man film in Atlanta. And Charlie was shooting as well with me. He had a couple of scenes as well and we had to hide but we were there together so like people couldn’t know we were in Atlanta.

However, his plan didn’t go too well as he was recognized by a Doordash guy. He recalled how the delivery guy tried to ask for an ID and he rejected it. The delivery guy took to X and shared that Garfield was rude. The Amazing Spider-Man actor shared his experience:

A Doordash guy recognized me my first night. And he immediately tweeted, ‘Yeah, I just delivered food to Andrew Garfield in his house. That MF was rude as hell.’ But in fact, all I was trying to do was be like, ‘You’re not allowed to see my face.’ He was asking me for my ID even though I hadn’t ordered alcohol. I’m like, ‘Oh no! Now everyone thinks I’m rude. And they know I’m in Atlanta. I just blew it on multiple levels.’

Interestingly, he even kept his role a secret from Emma Stone. He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Stone kept texting and asking him whether he made a cameo in the film. He replied, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” When he maintained his story long enough, Stone eventually believed him. After seeing the film, she texted him, “You’re a jerk.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available for streaming on Starz. Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
