Fandom debates can be heated and frustrating and Solo Leveling is no different. Like most series in the shonen genre, it isn’t isolated from burning questions. The best example of this is the ongoing Igris versus Beru debate though, fans may have found their answer after all.
Now, we all know that both are prime and superior in their strength and kill. They’re evenly matched with the Ant King shadow outrivalling the Blood Red commander. Here, the latter takes the cake for several reasons, which also makes him one of the well-written characters in the manhwa.
Igris versus Beru is a neverending debate
Igris and Beru bear semblance to each other in their loyalty to Sung Jinwoo and being the strongest shadows. Both were the duty-bound and loyal shadows of the former monarchs Ant King and Ashborn. It was only after Jinwoo’s defeat that they pledged their allegiance to the hunter.
While Beru harbors bloodlust and is rather crude, he possesses a unique and versatile arsenal of skills and abilities. Be it Gluttony, Healing Magic, or Poison Paralysis, he can counter and incapacitate the enemies ruthlessly. This is what puts him on par with the Blood Red Commander Igris (BRCI).
The commander, on the other hand, is skilled in combat, and sword-fighting and has his unique ability of dominator’s touch. But what makes him superior to the Ant King’s shadow is his presence which commands fear and respect. This also ties in well with his intelligence and aura as fans pointed out.

Indeed, he isn’t as multifarious, but Igris is in a league of his own. This is true for his regal presence and his strategic intelligence which makes him stand out. This further highlights Chugong’s characterization as the real MVP in the series.
Chugong’s characters are the unsung MVP’s in Solo Leveling
Chugong outdid themselves through their well-written characters in Solo Leveling. There are layers within them be it side characters, deuteragonists, or villains. Beru’s bloodlust and Igris’ devotion is one such instance and while they’re both shadows, they exhibit vulnerability on several occasions.
Their attachment to Suho as well as Jinwoo is endearing on many levels. The character dynamics is something that most people overlook when it comes to the series. One such example is Iron mimicking BRCI’s antics which is a running gag in the manhwa.
Chugong gives loyalty, devotion, and duty a whole new meaning with their writing of the Shadows. It is true that the series has impeccable animation and that it managed to solve its pacing problem. But the real MVPs are the characters that deserve their due mention now do they not?
Undoubtedly, Jinwoo is a relatable and familiar MC whose path serves as a hook for both readers and viewers. What takes the series up a notch are diverse characters like Go Gunhee and Yoo Jinho that underline the author’s flair in every sense.
To sum it up, both Shadows are intimidating and menacing in terms of their persona. While they differ in skills and strengths, they are strong allies and characters nonetheless.
