New Rangers investors ‘kept in the loop about Philippe Clement’s sacking’ as further details of stunning deal emerge

INCOMING Rangers investors Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh were kept in the loop about Philippe Clement’s sacking, according to a report.

There has been surprise in some quarters that the Gers should dispense with the services of Clement as manager and replace them with an interim group led by Barry Ferguson while the finishing touches have yet to be put in place over their stunning deal to snap up 51% of the club’s shares.

But a piece in The Athletic today provides some more intriguing details about the deal – and includes the nugget that the pair of incoming shareholders were ‘made aware’ about the departure of the Belgian.

Amongst the other points raised, is the fact that US businessman Andrew Cavenagh is set to be the larger party when the takeover goes through.

This could help the deal get round dual ownership rules, one potential roadblock of which was flagged up elsewhere today.

The Athletic says that both Cavenagh and the 49ers faction led by Marathe will work via a single investment vehicle, with Dave King, John Bennett and Barry Scott set to sell their shares.

That comprises 21.5% of shares with other shareholders such as George Taylor, John Halsted and George Letham negotiating to allow Cavenagh and the 49ers to control the 51% of shares they require.

The new investors WON’T need to make a compulsory offer to the remaining shareholders when they go above 30%, it’s claimed – due to a rule change this month.

Meanwhile, Rangers hero Ally McCoist knows the club have pretty much hit rock bottom – because Celtic fans aren’t even LAUGHING at him any more.

The Ibrox hero found himself on the end of his usual grilling from Celtic-daft partner in crime Alan Brazil on the TalkSPORT breakfast show this morning.

Today the topic was on the 49ers proposed takeover – and why the club didn’t just stick with Philippe Clement until that deal is done.

McCoist replied: ” Unless… they’ve told them to do it before they get in.

“You know, get some of the dirty work done before we come in.

“Maybe. You’d hope that was the case. But in answer to your question, I don’t know.

“I mean, I just… I’m devastated. You lot aren’t even… You’re not even laughing at us any more.

“Honestly, my mates are… Celtic boys are phoning me, I’m saying, let’s get on..

“There’s nothing worse than getting sympathy for your biggest rivals.

“There’s nothing worse.”
