Barry McGuigan urges ‘addicted’ Katie Taylor to fight ‘new girl on the block’ before retiring from boxing

BARRY McGUIGAN hopes Katie Taylor fights Caroline Dubois before retiring from boxing.

The 38-year-old is set for a big year in 2025, with potential trilogy bouts against Amanda Serrano and Chantelle Cameron on her radar.

Irish boxing legend McGuigan believes that Taylor vs Serrano 3 will happen and that, if he was in a management capacity, he would suggest she retire after that.

However, the 63-year-old does not expect her to hang up the gloves any time soon due to her obsession with the sport.

McGuigan was speaking to Spinbet and said: “What she has achieved has been remarkable for women’s boxing, for Ireland too.

“She’s a superb girl who is very hard working and has been a great representative for women’s boxing and professional boxing in general.

“If I was managing her, I would want the Serrano fight and bow out, but I get the impression that even though she is 38, and a young 38 years old, she looks younger and, in your head, you feel young but when I look back, you think you’re never going to age.

“Katie is addicted to the sport since being a kid with her dad with what she achieved as an Olympian and everything else.

“We seem to focus on boxers when their ability starts to fade, and life expectancy starts to fade in the sport.

“She has achieved amazing things but will seriously have to think after the trilogy with Amanda Serrano about bowing out which will be very difficult.

“I get the impression Katie is the type of girl who will find it hard to leave boxing.”

If she does stick around after the Serrano trilogy, McGuigan hopes Taylor will face Caroline Dubois – sister of heavyweight champ Daniel Dubois.

The 24-year-old is the WBC lightweight champion having been upgraded from interim champ when the Bray woman relinquished the belt in December.

She will defend that title against Bo Mi Re Shin at the Royal Albert Hall on March 7.

Barry is part of the team of Dubois, who trains out of McGuigan Gym under his son Shane McGuigan.

And The Clones Cyclone hopes the Bray Bomber will stick around long enough for the two to square off.

He added: “Caroline Dubois has a tough fight coming up, but we are looking for the big names.

“Katie Taylor, Chantelle Cameron and Amanda Serrano.

“We have the new girl on the block who is flying in the gym and is looking better every single day.

“Caroline Dubois is hunting all of these girls and we hope Katie will stay around long enough to fight her.”
