“The budget is gone”: MHA: Vigilantes vs Main Series Character Design Comparisons Doesn’t Paint a Pretty Picture

After Deku’s inspiring journey from a quirk-less boy to the greatest hero in My Hero Academia, it’s time for Koichi Haimawari to take over. Koichi is the protagonist of MHA: Vigilantes, the spin-off and prequel to Kohei Horikoshi’s beloved series. The manga started its serialization in 2016, and the anime is scheduled to release in April this year.

MHA: Vigilantes already has a dedicated fanbase that’s eagerly looking forward to the premiere. Plus, new fans or My Hero Academia fans are also curious about this new anime, which is an extension of the MHA world.

However, we might not be off to a good start as the character designs of pro heroes feel like a downgrade compared to the original series. However, there’s still plenty to look forward to.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes’ character designs seem like a downgrade

The characters of MHA: Vigilantes have already become fan favorites. Koichi’s character development and the way he utilizes his useless quirk make him intriguing to fans. Even the interactions between the central cast are a great mix of fun and depth.

All the characters looked great in the first trailer that was released back in January. However, the same can’t be said about the characters from the original series. A Reddit post compared the original designs of some characters with their designs in Vigilantes.

Individually, the character designs of the pro heroes look great, but when compared to the main series, there’s an evident difference. The designs look less detailed and more goofy in comparison.

Fans are especially disappointed with All Might’s character design, as he clearly looks less intimidating.

Aizawa looked much better in the trailer, and hopefully, that’s how we’ll see him in the anime as well. Even though the designs are not the best, they look much worse here as a result of comparison. In motion, they might look better. It also needs to be considered how MHA: Vigilantes has a much different feel than the original series.

MHA: Vigilantes gears up for its spring release

MHA: Vigilantes is scheduled for an April release, and there’s a lot to look forward to. Koichi’s quirk is reminiscent of Spider-Man and his first impression is somewhat similar to Deku. But, he doesn’t exude the typical shonen energy.

The setting of Vigilantes is much darker as well, which will be interesting to see. Hopefully, the character designs will fit in better with the other good aspects of the anime, leading to a great experience overall.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes will be released on April 7, 2025.
