Robert Pattinson Is Officially Out: ‘Brave and the Bold’ Refuses to Name Writer for The Dark Knight and Damian Wayne Story

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe and the DCU Batman will officially go in different directions after the latest announcement. James Gunn initially had plans to include Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU. According to Gunn, it was director Matt Reeves’ choice to keep his film separate from the main DC universe.

DCU’s Batman film, Brave and the Bold, will now move forward under Andy Muschietti, who earlier directed The Flash. Interestingly, they have a writer for the story but refused to name him at this point. Gunn and Peter Safran have read what Matt Reeves has written so far for The Batman 2 and shared that they loved the story.

In their latest press conference, James Gunn and Peter Safran provided updates to their DCU projects and most of them are intact from their earlier announcement in 2023. While their Batman film, Brave and the Bold, is yet to land its lead star, Gunn and Safran have reportedly hired a writer for the story.

It was earlier confirmed that Andy Muschietti would helm this film but Gunn and Safran were looking for writers for the project at that point. Interestingly, the DC co-CEOs decided not to name the writer in the press conference. They explained their decision, sharing that “it puts too much pressure on the guy” (via Deadline).

According to Deadline, the storyline is pretty much what they announced earlier. It is a Dark Knight and Damian Wayne story, which is based on Grant Morrison’s run of Batman in the DC Comics. Bruce Wayne is unaware that he has a son and Damian Wayne is quite the “firecracker” of a Robin in this story. Fans await to see the casting of these two characters in the movie.

During the announcement of the DCU projects in January 2023, Gunn shared that Brave and the Bold will introduce “the Bat family” including his “favorite Robin,” Damian Wayne. Gunn also shared that the film is “a very strange sort of father-son story about the two of them,” referring to Bruce and Damian Wayne.

During the recent announcement, James Gunn once again reiterated that Robert Pattinson‘s Elseworlds Batman will remain separate from the DCU. He also provided an update on Matt Reeves‘ sequel to the 2022 film, sharing that the film hasn’t completed the script yet. However, Gunn and Safran are more than happy with what they have read.

It was also shared that the film will go into production only by the end of 2025. The film is expected to hit the theaters on October 1, 2027. Gunn earlier revealed on his Threads account that it wasn’t his decision to not include Reeves’ Batman in the DCU.

One Threads user asked The Suicide Squad director why Reeves’ The Batman wasn’t “allowed” to exist within the DCU. In his response, Gunn made it clear that it isn’t as if he did not allow The Batman in the DCU; rather, it was Reeves’ choice to keep it separate.

Interestingly, the film was intended to be part of the DCEU, with Ben Affleck set to direct and star in the film. However, Affleck had reservations about certain elements of the project and dropped out. When Reeves took over, he removed the DCEU connections in the story and fleshed out his own standalone movie.

While Brave and the Bold has yet to announce a release timeline, Gunn’s Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, marking the beginning of the new DCU era in theaters.
