Today will start off with showers in the western half of the country that will move to become more widespread in to the afternoon.

Some of those showers will be “heavy” and falls of hail are possible.

There will be a mix of sunny spells thrown in with 7C to 10C temperatures.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said: “Feeling fresh with a biting windchill and some gusts as showers hit.

“More organized band of showers crossing country tomorrow night followed by sunny spells and odd shower Wednesday.”

Tonight temperatures will drop down to freezing, sitting at 0C with sleet expected to fall.

Met Eireann’s Matthew Martin said: “Tonight there’ll be clear spells and just isolated showers early on.

“However, outbreaks of squally rain are going to move in from the Atlantic to affect the southwest later tonight and extend northeastwards over Ireland during the course of the night.

“A few thunderstorms are possible and there is the chance of some sleet on northern hills later tonight.”

Wednesday morning will see showers clearing from east Ulster early on leaving a bright and sunny day with a breeze.

Some of the showers will be “heavy and prolonged” at times on Wednesday.

These showers will be particularly the northwest, and there is a risk of hail and thunder.

Temperatures during the day will sit between 6C to 9C but will drop to a -2C on Wednesday night into Thursday.

Met Eireann said: “Showers will become confined to Atlantic coastal areas on Wednesday night and many areas will become dry with clear skies.

“A cold night with lowest temperatures of -2Cto +2C degrees with frost developing in some areas as westerly winds fall light over land.”

‘PLENTY OF SUNSHINE’

Thursday will be bright and fresh with “plenty of sunshine” and just passing showers.

However, these showers will be confined to coastal counties with temperatures of 7C to 10C.

Temperatures to plummet right down to -2C again on Thursday night with frost also forming.

Pockets of fog will develop over Thursday night too.

Friday will be another dry day with some cloud forming but with just light showers and sunny spells.

Temperatures will get up to 8C to 11C after the cold night, but won’t drop below 2C overnight.

And the weekend temperatures currently look to be staying above freezing.
