Last Minute Appointments: Akanvariba calls for consensus on public sector hiring amid post-election dismissals

Minister of State-designate for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has called for a unified approach among stakeholders to reform recruitment practices within the public sector.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, Akanvariba stressed the importance of collective dialogue and agreement to ensure transparency and fairness in public sector hiring.

“It is about engagement, understanding the issue, and collective agreement as to how we put people into our services, that will help us,” she told the committee when asked about her stance on the dismissal of last-minute appointments made by the Akufo-Addo administration after the 2024 general elections.

She highlighted the challenges posed by political interference, noting that favouritism and nepotism often compromise the integrity of the recruitment process.

“Because of the lack of political will, some people are employed due to favouritism and nepotism. Others are there who are not supposed to be there,” she stated.

Akanvariba emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the recruitment system to ensure that appointments are merit-based, transparent, and free from political bias.
