“I want to be one of the greats”: Timothée Chalamet Skips Leonardo Dicaprio in His Acceptance Speech as Actor Reveals His Endgame

Hosted by Kristen Bell, the Screen Actors Guild Awards returned to honor some of the finest works to come out of 2024 cinema. From Demi Moore winning the Best Actress award for The Substance to Jane Fonda’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the event was filled with memorable moments, including Timothée Chalamet’s big win – Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Thanks to A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet won his first SAG award after being nominated a few times before. The actor walked up to the stage looking as dapper as ever and made it clear what he’s looking to achieve in the future – become one of the greats. However, while listing out the names of those who have reached new heights in their respective fields, he missed out on one important name – Leonardo DiCaprio.

Timothée Chalamet is not going to be humble or downplay the efforts that he has put into A Complete Unknown and we love him for that. After all, the man gave the film more than half a decade of his life and the recognition he is receiving for portraying Bob Dylan is well-deserved. He is also up for an Oscar, although, the competition is quite tough.

Thus, when his name was called out for Best Actor at the SAG awards, none of us batted an eye. Dressed in his leather suit with a lime green shirt, Chalamet walked onto the stage, and let’s just say his acceptance speech was pretty damn powerful.

After thanking his mother and talking about the efforts that have gone into A Complete Unknown, Chalamet admitted that all he is looking for in the industry is “greatness.” The young actor aspires to be named amongst the greatest of the greatest, the best of the best. These include Daniel Day-Lewis Viola Davis, Michael Jordan, and more.

And while he believes that he isn’t quite there yet, A Complete Unknown is a push in the right direction. (Via Variety).

I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day, Lewis, Marlon, Brando and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So I’m deeply grateful. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. it’s a little more ammo to keep going. Thank you so much.

While the names Chalamet gave a shoutout to in his speech, he left many of Hollywood’s GOATS out, including Leonardo DiCaprio. Of course, he cannot list every single person who has impacted the industry and made it what it is today, but missing out on DiCaprio when he gave him a solid piece of advice seems a little harsh.

What was Leonardo DiCaprio’s advice to Timothée Chalamet?

When Chalamet was only just starting in Hollywood, DiCaprio had already established himself as a force to reckon with. Needless to say, any advice coming from this man was going to be as precious as gold for the young actor.

In an interview with The New York Times, Chalamet recalled DiCaprio’s words of wisdom stating that the veteran actor told him to stay away from two things during his rise to fame – hard drugs and superhero films.

Chalamet said, “Well, Leonardo DiCaprio said to me, ‘No superhero movies, no hard drugs.’ Which I thought was very good. I follow them both! ” The two actors have worked together on Don’t Look Up (2021) and as far as superhero flicks are concerned, they might have different opinions on it.

While the door to becoming a part of the superhero universe is probably sealed shut for DiCaprio, Chalamet believes that a good script and a good director are all he needs to consider donning a cape for. He said, “The movie that made me want to act is a superhero movie, ‘The Dark Knight.’ If the script was great, if the director was great, I’d have to consider it.”

Coming back to the awards, this was a great night for Chalamet, who not only won his first SAG award but also made history by becoming the youngest person to win best actor.
