Barry Ferguson all smiles as he’s spotted at Rangers training ground for first time since being named head coach

BARRY FERGUSON knows his way around the Rangers training ground more than most.

But he’s never experienced it as a manager – until now.

The Ibrox hero was revealed as the club’s new head coach until the end of the season today.

He will be assisted by a trio of Gers legends as well as Issame Charai, who only joined last month and will stay on as a coach despite the departure of Philippe Clement.

Ferguson, 47, has brought ex-players Billy Dodds, Neil McCann and Allan McGregor with him.

The former midfielder won 15 trophies as a player at Ibrox and was inducted into the club’s hall of fame last year.

But his managerial record is mixed and he hasn’t coached for three years since leaving struggling Alloa Athletic.

Charai took this morning‘s training session following the 2-0 defeat to St Mirren at the weekend.

But Ferguson was at the Rangers Training Centre in Milngavie today for meetings and was spotted on his way into the facility at around 5pm.

Ferguson arrived in an orange Ford Ranger pickup truck and gave a brief wave to the cameras as he drove through the gates.

He was closely followed by old pal McGregor in a silver BMW, who in theory will take the lead with the goalkeepers as a goalie coach.

Neil McCann and Billy Dodds arrived together in McCann’s Audi A7, with Dodds giving reporters a thumbs up as they entered the car park.

Rangers confirmed in their statement announcing the interim management team that a new permanent manager would be appointed in the coming months – with the looming takeover by 49ers Enterprises being a major factor.

The club said: “Rangers Football Club can today announce Hall of Fame member and former club captain, Barry Ferguson, is to become Head Coach of our men’s first team until the end of the season.

“Ferguson, who won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups across two spells at Ibrox, will be joined by coaches Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.

“As confirmed yesterday, Philippe Clement is leaving the club. In addition, Alex Rae, Colin Stewart and Stephan van der Heyden are also departing. Rangers FC would like to thank Philippe, Alex, Colin and Stephan for their contribution and commitment. They will always be welcome at the club.

“Brian Gilmour will remain with Rangers to continue to bridge the gap between the academy and the first-team.

“The ongoing football review will continue, and a new, permanent manager will be appointed in the coming months.”
