As 1923 comes to a close, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe is beginning to pick up all the remaining loose ends to tie them together. His masterful ability to tell the story of five generations of Duttons in a comprehensive 3 series arc is a feat in itself. Understandably, Sheridan would not leave one of the strongest and most memorable core Dutton clan members out in the cold.

Despite 1923 charting the story of Jacob and Cara Dutton, the focus has been just as much on the younger generation, starring Brendan Sklenar as Spencer Dutton. As the younger brother of the 1883 protagonist, Elsa Dutton, the spotlight has belonged to Sklenar’s character throughout both seasons of the series.
Now, in the looming final moments, Sheridan seems to want to close the book on Spencer’s character by giving the audience a definitive ending to 1923.
Taylor Sheridan looks to finish strong on 1923

Despite the parameters within which sits the world of 1923, its creator, Taylor Sheridan, has big plans for the series, which is arguably the last of the Dutton prequels. For the grand finale, Sheridan has prepared an exit worthy of the legacy of these ranchers who have carved a home out of hopes, dreams, and pure ambition.
Season 2 will deliver the final 8 episodes of 1923 – where the penultimate one is aptly titled A Dream and a Memory. In accordance with the name, the series will deliver an ending that will be worth remembering even by Yellowstone‘s standards and the groundwork for it has already been laid down by Sheridan.
With his brilliant grip on the Dutton history, Taylor Sheridan will strike at the heart of the story by shifting the focus back on Brandon Sklenar‘s character, Spencer Dutton. After following his arc devotedly throughout Season 1, fans have not only grown fond of the character but also invested in his fate within the Yellowstone universe.
The penultimate episode of 1923 Season 2 will deliver a fitting response to that much-anticipated question, and Spencer Dutton will be granted appropriate closure, unlike the characters left hanging in the season finale of 1883.
1923 Season 2 casting news spoils the surprise finale

For the eagle-eyed fans, there isn’t much that can catch them off-guard, especially as they unearth every minute detail about the films and shows in question. In the case of 1923, it isn’t much different, as fans have now noticed a noteworthy detail in the cast roster for the show’s Season 2 finale.
Iron Man star Gerard Sanders, who played Howard Stark in the first MCU film, has been cast in 1923 Season 2, Episode 7 as “1969 Spencer” (via IMDb). While Spencer’s age has not been determined yet, considering he was born after Elsa’s death, he is approximately 38 to 40 years old in 1923. This makes the 1969 Spencer an octogenarian.
Although this does not explain much in terms of Spencer’s fate, it also ruins any element of surprise for a series that is famously known to kill off fan-favorite characters in shocking plot twists.
Meanwhile, seeing Spencer live a full life after the significant time jump may help bridge the gap between 1923 and Yellowstone since Kevin Costner‘s John Dutton would already be 14 years old by 1969. As such, it would officially close the loop and tie up all the loose ends within the Yellowstone universe.
1923 is available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes coming out every Sunday.
