Paramount+’s 1923 Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: What Does Whitfield Have Planned for the Yellowstone?

Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) gathers a dining room full of rich, white men, all seeking an investment opportunity. Each expects Whitfield to discuss mining the Yellowstone. However, only Banner (Game of Thrones’ Jerome Flynn) knows his mentor’s true plan—Whitfield wants to turn Montana into a tourist attraction.

For one, people love untamed danger, and Montana offers that. While most families prefer warm weather and sandy beaches, Big Sky provides unique amenities like outdoor activities, skiing, and an unparalleled wilderness experience. Soon, all the men are eager to hand over $100,000 to be part of it.

Banner reminds Whitfield that they must eliminate the Dutton’s to make it happen. Whitfield devises an ingenious plan: Banner will kill the Dutton’s and dispose of them in a government-owned area with no residents. No judge, no trial, no jury—just a jurisdictional dead zone. Could this be the same “Train Station” used by John Dutton in the original Yellowstone?

Dr. Miller diagnoses Elizabeth (Landman’s Michelle Randolph), as pregnant! Jack (Darren Mann) is the father. This revelation comes after Elizabeth injects herself with her own rabies medication and experiences more pain than usual. That’s when Cara (Helen Mirren) calls the doctor, who confirms the diagnosis.

Before this, Jacob (Harrison Ford) manages to calm Elizabeth by listening to her concerns. Meanwhile, Dr. Miller performs surgery on Zane (Brian Geraghty), drilling a hole into his skull to drain the swelling in his brain. Zane wakes up mid-surgery, screaming—making even me jump out of my seat. Soon, though, he is no longer dizzy and can walk again.

Meanwhile, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) is viciously attacked by the man stalking her at the train station. He steals her jewelry, though it is unclear if he takes her money. She wakes up battered and bruised, her clothes torn, and manages to run onto the moving train to Billings. She is forced to walk through the first-class section, where her wealthy peers look down on her.

1923 season 2 episode 4 ends with Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) being arrested by a Fort Worth sheriff after Luca (Andy Dispensa) is taken into custody and gives him up. The authorities bring Spencer in and inform him that they need his help to complete his bootlegging responsibilities by setting up a sting to raid the illegal operation.

Spencer complies, but the sheriff handcuffs him to the steering wheel. He manages to escape by hopping onto a railroad car—just like his wife—heading toward the ocean. Inside the car, he encounters three “tramps” who demand that he pay a “tax.” He refuses and readies his rifle. They wait for him to fall asleep, but when they attempt to disarm him, Spencer kills all three.

He jumps off the moving train, retrieves his weapon and bag, and walks into the sunset. Meanwhile, Teonna Rainwater and her escorts help move cattle into Texas. There, they discover a Wanted poster offering a $250 reward—equivalent to about $5,000 in today’s dollars.
