The second season of 1923 took fans back to the world of Yellowstone, after the series ended in December 2024. Written by Taylor Sheridan and starring Harrison Ford, the prequel series sees the Duttons braving the winter in Montana as their ranch is under attack by both natural and man-made calamities.
Ford and co-star Helen Mirren had to go through reportedly extreme weather conditions while filming. While the situation was probably not as bad as their fictional counterparts, Mirren and Ford reportedly still had to brave the intense cold in Montana with plenty of warm clothing. Ford even joked that they wore battery-powered underwear.
Taylor Sheridan made Harrison Ford film through blistering cold weather in 1923

While the cast and crew of Yellowstone and its prequel 1883 had to go through intense heat, Taylor Sheridan’s cast for 1923 reportedly had the opposite experience. Harrison Ford and the Dutton gang had to reportedly go through intense cold, with some scenes even being shot during minus-21-degree weather.
Filmed in Montana, the second season of 1923 takes place during the winter and sees the Duttons struggle to make ends meet. The ranch is in trouble with attacks all around, apart from nature itself showing all its cold fury. As Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer travels to the ranch, he can only hope that his family remains alive.

In a behind-the-scenes interview with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, they revealed how difficult was to brave through the winters while filming. Mirren mentioned that she wore a lot of gloves, scarves, and hats. Ford also joked that they had battery-powered underwear (via Instagram),
And batteries. We got plug-in underwear. They have the longest extension cords. But other than that, with the wind chill factor, it was 21 degrees below zero.
While the actors were significantly more well-off than their fictional counterparts during the winter, it still seemed to be a harsh environment.
Harrison Ford stressed how nature is an antagonist in 1923 Season 2

In the second season of Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, which is a Yellowstone prequel, the Duttons are undergoing a major crisis. The ranch is under attack from not just Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield, but also from nature itself. The Duttons are facing a financial crisis and starvation, leading them to hunt for food in the harshest winter.
When the season premiere aired, Ford spoke about how nature played a role in the series and how it acted as an obstacle. He said to Variety,
The challenges of nature are matched by the challenges coming from mankind. Those pressures are intense and intensifying on the Duttons this season. The lives that these people are living are tenuous. It is something we don’t grasp in our contemporary lives. The details of how much rougher and more difficult these lives were only a hundred years ago.
In a BTS video, Ford also mentioned how nature and mankind were two very alarming threats for the Duttons this season and if nature somehow spared them, mankind would still get them.
1923 is available to stream on Paramount+.
