‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Pushed Jinshi to His Absolute Limits in a Trial That Was More Testing Than His Royal Bloodline

Jinshi is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing characters of The Apothecary Diaries because of the transformation we witness in him. At the beginning of the series, he is introduced as a confident, mysterious, and beautiful eunuch with a considerable amount of power in the palace.

Later, we find out more about him and see the issues he had to face while growing up. The previous episode only highlighted the internal troubles Jinshi faces on a regular basis.

He never really wanted to disclose his identity as a Prince to Maomao because of her extreme awareness of her class. But when he finally does build the resolve to come clean, the situation pushes him down a different path.

Jinshi’s life of expectations and secrets in The Apothecary Diaries

Jinshi is a royal Prince whose birth is a subject of mystery within the palace because of the circumstances surrounding it. On top of that, to escape the fate of a King who must sacrifice his own needs for the nation, he pretends to be a eunuch in the rear palace.

If he gets thrust into the battle of succession, he will never get a life of freedom or be able to marry the woman he loves. Apart from that, there are constant threats to his life from forces who do not want the royal bloodline to survive.

The assassination attempt in episode 11 of season 2 just solidified the fact that being a part of the royal family is not that great.

We also should not forget that Jinshi is only 19 years old and has been forced to mature faster than his age. Most of the time, he acts in a superior manner, but with Maomao, we often see him acting childishly because, with only her, he can be himself.

Thus, his attempt to disclose his royal identity must have taken a great deal of courage, but he could not even go through with that because the assassins took that moment to shoot him. How much more must he face before he can finally live the life he wants?

The person who is drawing out new sides of Jinshi is definitely Maomao. For her, Jinshi, who is second in line to the throne, can even get jealous, portraying a very humane side of him.

Jinshi also loves that she does not treat him like a figure of authority and makes him feel like an individual with his own emotions. But yes, he is aware of the problems that stand in his quest for love. Maomao detests power imbalance, and her self-preserving nature will not let her return Jinshi’s feelings.

Jinshi also understands how difficult it will be for him and Maomao to be together if he really does end up as the King. We see this happen firsthand when the Emperor had to cast out his beloved wife, Ah-Duo, because of political pressures.

The previous episode exposed Jinshi’s vulnerabilities, especially when he struggled to uncover his identity to Maomao. There is a degree of uncertainty regarding their relationship, but it is nothing that both of them cannot overcome.
