Eric Kripke brought the iconic fantasy TV series, Supernatural starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, which continues to be a fan favorite to this day. However, some fans believe certain storylines could have been handled better, particularly the aftermath of the angels’ fall in the Season 8 finale.
The Season 8 finale follows the Fall of the Angels after Metatron expels them from Heaven, stripping them of their wings and leaving them nearly extinct. It has received mixed reactions, with many arguing that the storyline likely nerfed angels, rendering them more human-like and less formidable.

The Fall of Angels in the Supernatural Season 8 finale continues to be a point of argument
The introduction of angels in Supernatural marked a significant shift in the series. While the addition enriched the storyline, some fans felt that the depiction of angels and their realms lacked creativity.
And the public opinion of the show’s depiction of angels only worsened following the season 8 finale, with the Fall of the Angels. The event, triggered by Metatron expelling them from Heaven, left angels stripped of their wings and much of their power.

Stripped much of their power, they struggled to survive, leading to faction wars and internal conflicts while attempting to adapt to their human lives. And many fans were disappointed with the direction this storyline took and its impact on the characters.
“The fall of the angels was pretty awesome,” one Reddit user said while reflecting on the pivotal moment in the series. However, they also added, “But in hindsight, it’s one the worst things to ever happen in the show.”
The fan further argued that beyond the show and the characters, “it permanently ruined the angels as a species.” Instead of being powerful, divine warriors, angels became slightly stronger humans, losing their mystique and significance.
This was perhaps the single worst thing to happen in the show

Others speculated that the showrunners orchestrated the Fall of the Angels to create a power balance among characters or simply for shock value.
The Supernatural creator and the original showrunner had previously expressed concerns, noting the reason he deliberately avoided introducing angels in the early seasons of the series.
Supernatural creator Eric Kripke was not keen on adding angels to the series
Eric Kripke, the creator of the fantasy horror series, who also served as the showrunner for the first five seasons, has shared that he did not want to introduce angels in the show as it would have led to some major power imbalance in the series.

As per Entertainment Weekly, Kripke explained how it would have undermined the tension and stakes of Sam and Dean’s struggles. He said,
I used to have, in the first three seasons of the show, this kind of no-angel policy. I thought it’d be too easy if someone really powerful could come in and save them.
However, while it could be argued in Kripke’s favor that he avoided the issue for the first three seasons, he surely did not handle it well once angels were eventually introduced into the series.
He further reflected on his idea to subvert traditional expectations by making angels flawed, arrogant, and often antagonistic rather than purely good. “The thought popped in my head…, which was like, you could have angels, just make them d**ks,” he further stated.
And the creative choice ultimately led to one of the most polarizing moments in the show’s history. Some fans appreciated the bold narrative shift, while others felt it diminished the celestial mystique of angels, making them little more than petty, power-hungry beings.
Supernatural is available to watch on Max.
