You’re Missing Out If You Haven’t Seen the Most Underrated Anime Studio Bones Still Hasn’t Fully Adapted

There are few anime that manages to capture the perfect mix of action, comedy, and heartfelt storytelling, like Noragami. It is one of the evergreen stories that you can pick up at any time and still feel connected.

Such a timeless work was brilliantly depicted by Studio Bones, with two seasons worth of content, Noragami has been entertaining millions of fans across the world. But since season 2 in 2015, it has been close to a decade with no news about the further adaptation of Noragami.

The series itself is based on the manga of the same name. Back in 2015, the series had caught up with the manga, but in January 2024, the Noragami manga was completed. Why has it not been picked up yet? What is Bones doing?

Noragami: The best anime Bones has yet to finish

There is no doubt that Noragami is one of the classic anime that should be on every newcomer’s watchlist. It encompasses a philosophical storyline with many emotions being depicted at a depth that a fantastical anime wouldn’t be able to usually capture.

Not only are the characters beautifully fleshed out, but even their bonds and relationships seem organic and natural. The source itself is highly acclaimed (the manga), and Studio Bones has used impressive visuals that seem relevant and vibrant even today, more than a decade later.

With its rich world-building and compelling characters, it seemed destined for long-term success. It felt like there were going to be a lot of expansions, and the fans were eagerly waiting. But there was no news, gradually, people began to start forgetting about the series.

Noragami ended up relegated to the watchlist of anime fans after four to five years. Yet, now nearly a decade after Season 2 (Noragami Aragoto), there’s still no sign of a third season. This raises the question—why hasn’t Studio Bones fully adapted one of its most beloved series?

Could Noragami make a grand return?

The unique premise of Noragami is that the story revolves around Yato, a minor god with grand ambitions, his faithful companion, Yukine, and the human girl Hiyori Iki, whose soul frequently detaches from her body and sets off completely wild adventures.

The blend of supernatural battles, deep emotional arcs, and mythology-based storytelling means that not only did it carve a niche, but even after a decade, it still remains unique and iconic, with no one daring to replicate its success.

Given the series’ popularity, many expected a third season to follow soon after, but it never came. Now that the series has reached its end as a manga, it is time for Studio Bones to revive the anime and finish what it started. But it has been picking newer titles like Vanitas.

If Noragami does return, could it make a connection with the current anime fans? Or has it been far too long to associate it with the second season from a decade ago? It all depends on Studio Bones and how the market perceives Noragami now.

Noragami and Vanitas no Carte are currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
