Dogs or Cats: Matt Damon Has an Arnold Schwarzenegger-Like Jacked Cat but Is He a Cat Person?

When you think of Matt Damon, you probably think of the Oscar-winning actor with a ripped body that will make you want to give up carbs in an instant. But do you know that the man is a proud pet parent of a cat that is so tough it could give Arnold Schwarzenegger a run for his money? The cat is a rescue from Costa Rica, where he adopted him from while on a trip. And if you think the fur baby hasn’t seen the lows of life, you are very, very wrong.

As Matt Damon tells the ‘survival of the fittest’ story about his feline friend, we cannot help but listen in awe and completely admire the cat’s resilience. Honestly, with the life he has seen, he deserves all the treats in the world!

Matt Damon’s adopted cat is a real fighter

Back in 2024, Matt Damon paid a visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. As part of The Colbert Questionert, the actor was asked whether he prefers cats or dogs. Before answering the question, he admitted that he actually has both at his home.

When Colbert pressed on and had him choose one out of the two, Damon replied with a simple, “I mean…I’ve got four dogs and one cat. So…” While this very obviously means that he is more of a dog person, the way he dives into a story about his cat speaks volumes about his love for the fur baby.

Damon revealed that he found the cat while on a month-long trip to Costa Rica and described him as “the coolest cat. Why? Well, read on, and you will have no choice but to agree with the Jason Bourne actor.

He recalled how he found his cat fighting for his life with two giant holes in his body, but still hunting. Talk about badassery at its finest. So, naturally, Damon started taking care of the cat while staying at the Airbnb, and by the time his trip came to an end, he was just so attached to the cat that he had no choice but to bring him home. And that’s how a random cat from Costa Rica became a part of the Damon household.

However, the story doesn’t end here. After coming back with Damon, he sadly ended up developing a brain tumor, but worry not, the cat’s a fighter!

Given the fact that he is a jungle cat that Damon rescued, the highly successful actor was convinced that he would have a great time in his yard. Little did he know that the cat was DONE with being outside. Damon stated, “He moves into our house. I had a little yard in L.A. He never went outside ever again.”

A little while later, the cat was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The actor was determined not to let the “toughest cat” he knows succumb to this. He took him to a cat neurologist, Chad, who believed that the pet didn’t have a quality of life anymore.

Damon decided to have a tough conversation with his children and promised to bring the cat back to the doctor if he didn’t get better in three weeks

He recalled

Eventually we moved to New York and the cat has lost a lot of weight and he’s only walking in left circles. I take him to the animal hospital and I meet the cat neurologist…The dude’s name is Chad. Chad goes, ‘Look, you know, at a certain point you have to have this conversation with your children because being a pet owner, part of doing that is giving them their dignity. This cat doesn’t really have a quality of life anymore. I said, ‘I agree. I’m going to have that conversation. I’m going to bring him back in three weeks if he’s not better.’

With little to lose, Chad suggested loading the cat up with steroids and hoping for the best. Despite the danger of long-term issues, they decided to go with it. It has been more than two years since this happened, and the cat’s doing better than ever and even making his pet parent compare him to one of the most jacked-up actors in Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Chad said, ‘I could load him up on steroids’ And I go, ‘Are there long-term issues with that?’ He hoes, ‘Yeah! Massive long-term issues with that. But we could see what happens.’ That was two and a half years ago. Now he’s jacked and I joke that he’s like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s like [In Schwarzenegger’s voice] ‘Good morning!’ He’s got muscles on muscles. He’s still with us.

We told you the cat is a fighter! Despite having a 4:1 dog-to-cat ratio, it is pretty clear that Damon is extremely fond of his furry sidekick. Honestly, the only thing that could make this story better is if we get to see his cat!
