As a mother of four, Kelly Stafford has learned that, sometimes, you have to play the role of party pooper.
Kelly, 35, candidly explained how things around the Stafford household haven’t been so pretty lately on the Thursday, March 27, episode of her “The Morning After” podcast.
“I have two children — I’m not going to name their names — but they have decided that they run the world and that they know what’s best and they have all the attitude now,” Kelly said. “I’m tired.”
While she didn’t divulge which two of her kids she was talking about, Kelly and her NFL quarterback husband, Matthew Stafford, are parents to twin daughters, Sawyer and Chandler, 7, whose birthday is on March 31. The couple also share daughters Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4.

“This has been an ongoing thing for the last couple of months where the attitudes have come into play,” Kelly continued. “I’m struggling to parent it. I am an enforcer. I am probably the mean parent. Matthew has now turned also. We tried the ‘good cop, bad cop’ situation that we always are. Clearly it’s not working because nothing has changed.”
During the podcast recording, Kelly said her daughters were sent “to their room.”
“They’ve been in there for the past hour and will be in there until dinner,” she added.
Things had become so strained, in fact, that Kelly even expanded the vocabulary she uses with her daughters.
“I’m gonna be totally honest, I said a few cuss words,” she admitted. “That’s one of the first times I’ve done that in front of them and to them. I was like, ‘This is bulls— what you’re doing.’”
So, with a birthday on the horizon, Kelly said she and Matthew, 37, took matters into their own hands.
“We told them, ‘Birthday party is off because we cannot honestly celebrate you guys right now just because of the way you’re behaving. We love you, but I don’t think you should have a celebration,’” Kelly recalled. “That was really how we both felt, Matthew and I.”

Kelly added, “That sucks as a parent. It was a really hard decision to make when we decided we were going to cancel it. It hurts you as much as it hurts them. Your kids are getting older, they’re only going to want birthday parties for so long and then they’ll just want gifts and a party with their friends elsewhere.”
However, shortly after making that big declaration, Kelly and Matthew were forced to reverse course after finding out “we can’t get our deposit back.”
“Could we have eaten the cost? Absolutely,” Kelly said. “But we’re also like, ‘OK, maybe this is a sign.’”
She continued, “I had to tell them the party was back on. I was like, ‘It is not because you changed your behavior. It is solely because Mommy and Daddy couldn’t get our money back.’”
