Man, 60s, dies and two others are hospitalised after Westmeath crash as road remains closed and gardai issue appeal

GARDAI are appealing for witnesses after the death of a man, 60s, in a two car collision in Westmeath this morning.

Two other men were injured in the crash on the N55 at The Pigeons around 11am today.

The male driver of one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Tullamore General Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

A male passenger, 80s, was brought to Tullamore General Hospital for injuries thought to be non-life-threatening.

The male driver of the other car, 80s, was also brought to Tullamore General Hospital.

His injuries are also thought to be non-life-threating at this time.

A technical examination has taken place and the road remains closed this evening.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses of the collision to come forward with information.

In a spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision which occurred on the N55 at The Pigeons, Co. Westmeath today, Thursday 27th March 2025.

“Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of the collision, involving two cars, which occurred at approximately 11am.

“The male driver of one of the cars, aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.”


“His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Tullamore General Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

“A male passenger, aged in his 80s, was conveyed to Tullamore General Hospital to receive treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

“The male driver of the second car, aged in his 80s, was also conveyed to Tullamore General Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening at this time.”

The statement continued: “No other injuries were reported.

“Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene.

“The road remains closed with local diversions in place.

“Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 10.15am and 11.15am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 649 2600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
