Suits was a perfect blend of humor and courtroom drama featuring some of the most complex characters out there. It also showcased several romantic plotlines, out of which fans definitely cheered for Donna Paulsen and Harvey Spector. Moreover, she was also called the ultimate fixer, praised for being his voice of reason as well as the one who could always pull him back from the edge.
But when you take a closer look at the duo, was she really the solution to his struggles or just plain, lazy writing? So, instead of showcasing his real trauma in the show, Suits leaned towards Donna as an instant cure.

The same was detailed by a user on Reddit as well, who went into great detail as to how the show oversimplified one of its most compelling character arcs.
Suits overhyped Donna without giving her real depth
For several years, Suits was the go-to show for any courtroom drama fan. It presented the likes of actors Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht as the leading duo: Michael Ross and Harvey Spector. But other than this relationship, the show was also famous for its romantic plotlines.
And in this, if any person who could match Harvey step for step, then that was Donna Paulsen. She had the power to easily calm him down with just a few words and also played a huge role in Pearson Specter Litt.

But despite her popularity and position of respect, a user on Reddit has questioned if she was really the game changer the show claimed she was. Or was her character just overhyped and underutilized?
The main example of this was just how easily Harvey’s panic attacks used to vanish as soon as she returned to his side. So, instead of crafting a meaningful plot towards emotional healing, the writers simply pressed fast forward and skipped most of the real development.
This kind of writing became a trend in the later seasons as well, and rather than giving her a strong arc,. Suits relied heavily on repetitive power moves and grand statements without giving any depth to her character. Fans who once embraced her sharp wit and loyalty began to feel as if she was being forced into a role she wasn’t prepared to handle.
The most notable of this was when she was made the COO of the firm—something which felt more like a fan service rather than logical character development. While these are just personal opinions, it does get one thinking as to what more could have been done with her character.
The reason why Sarah Rafferty and Patrick J. Adams are revisiting Suits now
Suits stars Sarah Rafferty and Patrick J. Adams jointly started a podcast years later after the show’s conclusion via Yahoo. It’s called Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast and gives fans an inside look at the show’s creative process, behind the scenes, and their own personal opinions and experiences while filming it.

Though the duo had played Donna and Mike Ross on the show for years, neither had watched it while working on it. The idea to revisit popped up when Adams was having a casual chat with actress Katie Lowes, who herself hosts a successful rewatch podcast herself.
So, Adams had a similar idea and reached out to Rafferty for his opinion, and she was equally intrigued by the premise. So, they joined forces and the rest was history.
You can watch all the seasons of Suits on Netflix.
