Watson’s Fate Revealed as CBS Announces Show Renewals and Shocking Network Cancellations

After many months of speculation, CBS has finally revealed the fate of Morris Chestnut’s Watson.

The medical drama show has officially been renewed for season 2.

“CBS announced today that its hit freshman drama series WATSON has been renewed for a second season, to be broadcast during the 2025-2026 television season on the Network, and available to stream on Paramount+,” the network announced in a press release on Wednesday, March 26.

The press release said that Watson “averages 6.79 million viewers each week according to Nielsen season-to-date most current data.” An exact premiere date for season 2 has not been revealed yet by the network.

“The premiere episode, which aired after the AFC Championship game, has been seen by 18.7 million multiplatform viewers in live plus 35 days of viewing, making it CBS’ most-watched scripted episode of the 2024-25 season,” the press release said. “In streaming alone, the premiere is the most-streamed scripted episode of all CBS Original series this season on Paramount+ with 7 million streaming viewers.”

In addition to Morris, 56, Watson also stars Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Inga Schlingmann, Ritchie Coster and Rochelle Aytes.

“Thank you for all the love and support! I can’t wait for Season 2 of @watsoncbs,” Morris wrote on Instagram after the news was revealed.

Watson is just one of the many series that have been renewed by CBS in recent months. The list of renewals also includes No. 1 entertainment series Tracker, No. 1 comedy George & Mandy’s First Marriage, No. 1 new unscripted series Hollywood Squares and No. 1 new series Matlock.

Additionally, Elsbeth, Fire Country, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, the Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country, the Blue Bloods offshoot Boston Blue, The Road, Survivor, The Amazing Race and Ghosts were all previously announced.

Watson will air a new episode on Sunday, March 30, at 9 p.m. ET. The episode is called “A Variant of Unknown Significance” and will feature guest star Whoopie Van Raam as Irene Adler.

“Watson runs into brilliant con artist and an old friend of Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler, when her son Angus is admitted to UHOP for temporary paralysis,” the press release for the upcoming episode. “The fellows help Watson after he grows fond of Angus and pursue various leads to find a cure to his illness, on the CBS Original series WATSON.”

Executive producer Craig Sweeny praised leading man Morris for his portrayal of the alluring detective.

“Morris cares about everyone he comes in contact with and is very deliberate about being kind and treating everybody the same way,” he told TV Insider in a February 10 interview. “When you’re writing a long-form TV show, you inevitably start to write to the qualities of the performers, and so that became a really defining trait of Watson’s in a great way that I think really works for the show.”

And the Rosewood alum has been equally as excited portraying the show’s lead.

“I just love being a part of the Sherlock Holmes mythology, having access to the incredible storylines, the incredible, rich characters,” Morris said.
