DiCaprio, who nearly quit acting early on, had his sights set on a serious career, inspired by his This Boy’s Life co-star Robert De Niro. Baldwin, however, believes his own advice helped Leo stick the landing. Baldwin once said in an interview with PBS News:
Acting was like s*x. And when I was young, I would do it with anybody. You get bedazzled by money and by other things. I always say to people, don’t live a big life in your early career, so you can really, really have a career, like Liam Neeson or like Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Kevin Kline, people that I really admire. He added,
I gave this advice to Leonardo DiCaprio, and look what he’s doing. It is just working like a charm for him. He’s did everything I told him to do, and, look, he’s got women jumping out of the trees on him and he’s got an Oscar. So, you’re welcome, Leo.
The two actors crossed paths in The Aviator, the only film DiCaprio ever took acting classes for. Baldwin was impressed, calling him gifted and admiring how he took advantage of his opportunities. But he couldn’t help but notice a quirky habit – whenever DiCaprio was deep in thought, the way he furrowed his brow reminded Baldwin of a symbolic character from East Asian writing.
As for Baldwin? He admits he never built the Hollywood connections DiCaprio did.
